Term Main definition
Anthropocene

The current geological age, viewed as the period during which human activity has been the dominant influence on climate and the environment.

Apocalypse Fatigue

Individual and public emotional exhaustion or apathy as a result of overwhelming information and moral choices relating to the environmental issues, Climate Change, the Biodiversity Crisis, and the collapse of civilisation as a result.

Biodiversity

The biological variety and variability of all life on Planet Earth. This is a measure of variation at the genetic, species, and ecosystem level.

Biodiversity Crisis

The devastating loss of biodiversity across Planet Earth. Current predictions expect between one third and one half of all species to be extinct before the century ends if the current crisis continues. 

Call to action

A stimulus to encourage immediate response to resolve an issue.

Crisis

An event or period of time that is likely to lead to danger or instability for an individual, a group, or an entire society.

Critically Endangered Species

Can be defined as the following: 80-90% population decline; at least 50% chance of extinction within 10 years or 3 generations; less than 250 mature individuals remaining; geographical extent of occurrence less than 100 square kilometres; geographical area of occupancy less than 10 square kilometres.

Deforestation

The purposeful clearing of forested land by humans.

Eco-tourism

A sub-industry involving responsible travel to areas of natural interest, supporting the conservation of the natural environment and the well-being of the people local to the area.

Empowerment

Authority or power given to someone to be able to do something.

Endangered Species

Can be defined as the following: 50-70% population decline; at least 20% of extinction within 20 years or 5 generations; less than 2,500 mature individuals remaining; geographical extent of occurrence less than 5,000 square kilometres; geographical area of occupancy less than 500 square kilometres.

Ethno-tourism

Exploration of cultural phenomena from the perspective of the subject(s) of study with minimal predetermined information and guided by questions. Learning about people and their environment through their eyes.

Extinct

A species with no remaining species alive anywhere.

Extinct in the Wild

A species that only survives in cultivation (for plants) or captivity (for animals), or beyond its established range.

Holocene Epoch/ Anthropocene Extinction/ Sixth Mass Extinction

These are all terms for the current and ongoing extinction event of species as a result of human activity.
