Human Poachers | The unlawful and unethical hunting, catching or stealing or wild animals. |
Indigenous | originating or occurring naturally in a particular place. |
Indigenous Community | A group of people bound by their shared ancestral connections to the land on which they live and the resources available there. |
Indigenous Reserve | A geographical area allocated, protected, and designated for the use of the population indigenous to that area. |
Indigenous Rights | Specific rights for indigenous peoples as determined by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. These aim to ensure the continuation of indigenous culture, and to protect indigenous people from harm, mistreatment, poverty and being forced out of their ancestral lands. |
KBAs - Key Biodiversity Areas | Sites contributing significantly to the global persistence of biodiversity’, in terrestrial, freshwater and marine ecosystems. |
Land grab | The unlawful or unfair act of seizing land, often in huge areas, by private companies, organisations, or governments, typically including the resources found in that area. |
Least Concern Species | A species with a widespread and abundant population. |
Native | a person born or a species originally grown or living in a particular place, whether subsequently resident or growing there or not. |
Nature Reserve | A geographical area protected to conserve its flora, fauna and natural features. |
Near Threatened Species | A species that is likely to qualify for a threatened category in the near future. |
Protected by Decree | Legally protected via the rule of law of the head of state of a geographical area.

Reforestation | Replanting trees in existing forested areas or those that have previously been devastated. This can be natural or purposeful. |
Socio-cultural regions | A geographical area characterised by the shared traditions, beliefs and social behaviours of its population. The UN’s Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues has listed the following 7 socio-cultural regions for purposes of broad indigenous representation: Africa; the Arctic; Asia; Central and South America and the Caribbean; Eastern Europe, Russian Federation, Central Asia and Transcaucasia; North America; and the Pacific. |
Stewardship | An ethic that embodies the responsible guardianship, planning, and management of resources. |
